Position description The Division of Engineering develops custom medical devices for physicians and researchers at Mayo Clinic. Our devices span the patient care spectrum from bench top research to patient bedside. This includes novel applications of deep brain stimulation, biosensor development, tissue engineering, organ assist devices and surgical instruments. The Microfabrication Laboratory seeks a highly qualified graduate student in engineering or materials science to assist with process development and optimization for the fabrication of thin-film electrode arrays and other medical microdevices. The successful candidate will work to optimize polymer deposition, direct-write lithography, and microscale 3D printing processes. The primary purpose of the Graduate Engineer Internship is to provide a graduate engineering student with relevant engineering experiences. One or more mentors will be assigned to the intern to provide instruction, guidance and to assess performance. The intern is responsible for learning the procedures and processes of the Division of Engineering and the assigned work unit. In addition, the intern will be given selected engineering work assignments to reinforce the learning experience and to provide benefit to the work unit. The engineering assignments may include designing components, developing a project strategy, gathering user needs, requirements and specifications, evaluating commercial components, assembling prototype systems, performing design verification and design validation, troubleshooting, and participating in design reviews. All assignments are within the context of the Division of Engineering Quality Management System (including safety risk management) and are performed in a multi-disciplinary development environment. The intern will be responsible for completing all internship-related assignments and reports for both Mayo and the participating educational facility (if applicable). Qualifications The incumbent must have received a Bachelor of Science in engineering or material science from an accredited college or university and be enrolled in a graduate degree program: **Please attach an undergraduate transcript and a current graduate transcript to application. **This is an 8-month position. Please attach an endorsement from your faculty advisor to application.The candidate will have completed at least one year of coursework in a Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science Master's or Doctoral Degree program. Demonstrated strong analytical and communication skills - both verbal and written. Additional qualifications The ideal candidate will also have education, experience and interest in the following areas:Classwork and interest in medical device development, microfabrication, and process development. Completion of one or more classes in microfabrication or MEMS with cleanroom experience. Experience with direct-write lithography, stereolithography, spin coating, electron-beam evaporation, laser ablation, and/or polymer chemical vapor deposition. Strong computer skills, especially in Matlab, Solidworks, or another CAD or layout software Working in a team environment with other project team members, users and project requesters. Exemption status Non-exempt Compensation Detail This position has a predetermined rate of $30.30 per hour.
